Spirit Song Publishing was started by Greg Barker. Greg holds a Bachelors Degree in Music from Indiana State University. He holds a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the same institution. Greg has been a high school band director, a middle school band director, an elementary music teacher, a professional trumpet player, and a published band/brass arranger. He was a conductor with the Florida Young Artist’s Orchestra 6 seasons and a 5 year member of Tapestry Brass, an Orlando based brass quintet.

He is currently Music Director for Family Worship Center in Sanford, Florida. He is the founder and director of The Central Florida Private School Music Festival which holds a Solo and Ensemble event each year for the greater Orlando metro area private schools and those students being home schooled. He is the Road Representative for Allegro Music Centre in Casselberry, Florida. He is also a skilled piano tuner.

After many years of teaching, guest conducting, and playing trumpet, it was his dream to write compositions for band. In that quest; he sought out local band directors, primarily middle school directors, to find out what they needed in the way of literature. Using these ideas and his own experience, he sought and received commissions for pieces. That was the beginning of the band catalogue for Spirit Song Publishing. Greg had also played in various brass groups over the years and arranged music for brass. Some of these arrangements are included in the catalogue under “Chamber Music” on the Home Page.

As we launch our new website this year (2009), we encourage your comments on how we can make the site more user friendly. If you are interested in having a commissioned work for your group, please click on “Commission a Piece” on our home page for contact information. You might be surprised at the excitement of the students, parents, and administration when you announce that you are having a composition written just for them. A world premier of a piece is quite a moral boost for your program. After the premier, they can visit our site and see the composition published with their school name listed.

As a Christian, Greg’s goal is to bring fun and interesting literature to the music education and performance community. As our motto says; “Sharing the Joy of Music” is our purpose and plan.
